He holds my every moment
ok... shall blog about Darlene Zschech and some of the Hillsongs team who came to New Creation Church (of course that's my church) to worship lead last Sunday... while it's still pretty fresh in my mind and yet to be rusty
on Saturday evening went down to do setup... supposed to do with Lionel one... but he was a little late... and Derek was sort of rushing and wanted to get it over and done with... and also quite curious as to how the stage is set up for every sunday service... so he volunteered to help out too... lol... but apparently he kinda rushed for nothing urgent... cause Craig, Hillsongs' keyboardist only came in after 9... and we finished about 8... but good to be early than late also lah
and since i was around, Lionel pulled me in to do monitor while Anthony be the stage manager... the musicians got hooked up and did sound check... and thereafter did dry-run through all the songs for praise and worship... had my share of the fun also lah... cause for Craig's monitor, being a guest musician, i was riding faders as though it was live sound mixing... i enjoyed it lah, and apparently he liked it too... and having rehearsal with Craig was awesome... he took on the roll of music directing, gave directions promptly, resulting in very tight band and nice sound... personal opinion, just thought he talked a little too much... moreover on sunday in the midst of praise and worship
finished rehearsal at about midnight... and after wrapping up, took a cab ride with Anthony... can claim the cab ride from church mah... reached home about 0145... washed up and used a bit of computer... 0215... wondering whether to catch some rest and run the risk of oversleeping... or to scrap that idea and probably lose concentration for the "big" sunday... in the end decided to sleep... lol
and what i predicted came through... mjay and i were supposed to give each other wakie up call at 0615... but mjay woke up at around 0645 and thought to himself, "it's 0645, jack should have woken up"... "but on second thought... if jack have woken up, he would have called me"... "think play safe, better call to confirm"... and true enough... if not for that call... ... God holds my future... LOL!!... and on my way down, Jason just called to ask if i reached... cause he's still stuck in the toilet... and true enough, when i reached rock audi at about 0745... nothing is being powered up yet... but managed to get everything up and running fast lah
and before 1st svc, a middle-aged, non-singaporean lady came up to me to ask who was that blonde lady on stage... so i replied that it was Darlene Zschech... and her eyes grew 'O.O'... "omg! omg! it really is her? it really is Darlene Zschech?... that's so cool... ... and you guys, you guys are the ones doing sound for Darlene Zschech?" "yea."... "omg you guys are doing sound for Darlene Zschech! isnt it just awesome?... ..." haha... but actually coming to think of it... it didnt cross the mind of jason and mine lah... but actually if we just pause and contemplate... yea, it is indeed an awesome experience and privilege to be doing sound for Darlene Zschech
so jason was mixing 1st and 2nd service... and i was mixing 3rd and 4th service... and manz was it awesome
Dave Watsons was the sound guy from Hillsongs stationed at FOH... and in the midst of 3rd service, he was playing around with my eq and compression... which i felt was good except for my snare... he boosted my lows for the snare quite drastically... it was a nice effect until it came to the song "Hosanna"... where there was a kick and snare-based intro... sounded very boxy sia... so after 3rd service, i reduced the amount of added lows by a slight amount and told Dave Watsons about it... and he went, "oh no no... you shouldn't be doing that... who's been teaching you?"... i kept silent for a while as he went on explaining
oh... another thing he did was that he actually wanted lots of bass and kick in the mix... when i try to pull down my bass and kick, especially during worship songs, he said, "no need to bring it down. it's perfect like this"... so i was just flowing along with him lor... his logic being cause when we try to crank up the vocals, it tends to sound harsh and brittle... so adding the low end helps maintain a loud but round mix... but what he doesnt know was that if we have lots of low end at FOH area, then the area in front will be very boomy due to the high ceiling... but whatever, it's hillsongs in New Creation Church!... so they're the boss manz
3rd service was quite of an adjustment for me... cause i wasnt mixing for 1st and 2nd... so need time to sit in comfortably... but 4th service was smooth-sailing and just as great... the only thing was that 4th service ended without a walkout song... which felt funny lah... and especially since it was 4th service... most of the congregation in the auditorium are from ARROW ministry... so they were still like hanging out expecting a final song... haha
a few comments to wrap up the day... a congregation walking past FOH commented at rather audible level, "wah! the sound system here very scary leh"... haha... what do they expect? it's Darlene Zschech with added bass guitar and kick drum... haiz... Singaporeans ah only know how to complain and not look at the good side
and also from Dave Watsons who said that i was smoking while mixing... haha... got a little blur lah but tried to camouflage that... but in what sense, i also dont understand lah... but probably he meant the way i was flowing with the music... then sound good mah, then will feel shiok mah, then body will groove and flow with the music lor... which is generally how i will do mixing... rather than having to take note of a hundred and one things... snare too loud... vocals too soft... bass sound muffled... and so many more... i'd choose to just flow with the music, and nevertheless, flow with the Spirit within... all the hundred and one things just seem to fall into place
and other than commenting that i was smoking... he gave a few tips as how to approach mixing... fresh from the oven of Hillsongs sound team... and an awesome opportunity to learn some outside-Lionel knowledge first-hand
that's it for the sunday with Darlene Zschech... an enjoyable and memorable sunday it was!
